Medical use of barium sulfate

The barium meal used for gastrointestinal examination is medicinal barium sulfate. Because it is insoluble in water and lipid, it will not be absorbed by gastrointestinal mucosa, so it is basically non-toxic to people. Barium meal radiography, that is, barium radiography of the digestive tract, refers to an examination method that uses barium sulfate as the contrast agent to show whether there is any disease in the digestive tract under X-ray irradiation.

principle

During X-ray examination, the density and thickness of various organs and tissues of the human body are different, so the contrast between black and white is natural. However, in some parts of the human body, especially the abdomen, because the density of several internal organs and tissues is generally similar, it is necessary to introduce contrast agents that are harmless to the human body (such as medical barium sulfate), and artificially improve the display contrast to achieve the ideal inspection effect. This method of examination is clinically called radiography.

Scope of application

The barium meal examination and barium enema examination are mostly used in X-ray examination. This examination is safe, non-invasive and has no side effects. However, some patients, such as patients with acute respiratory infection, patients with severe heart, liver and kidney dysfunction, and patients with positive iodine test, are generally not suitable for this examination.

malpractice

Barium ingestion or barium enema examination can only see the outline of the digestive tract, and the barium filled gastrointestinal radiography often covers up small lesions. Therefore, oral foaming agent or air injection into the intestinal tract is often used to make the gastrointestinal tract have both high-density barium agent and low-density air shadow, forming air barium contrast radiography, which is easy to obtain positive results.

classification

According to the needs of clinical diagnosis and treatment, gastrointestinal barium meal can be divided into upper gastrointestinal barium meal, total gastrointestinal barium meal, colon barium enema and small intestinal barium enema.

Special case handling method for editing this paragraph

In medicine, if the soluble barium salts such as barium chloride are wrongly used as barium sulfate, usually the soluble sulfate such as copper sulfate is used for detoxification. Barium ion belongs to heavy metal ion, which is very harmful to human body. If sulfate ion is introduced, barium ion can react with sulfate ion to produce barium sulfate, thus removing the danger.
